National Guard commander resigns over deadly shooting in Dnipro

Ukrainian National Guard Commander Mykola Balan has tendered his resignation due to a deadly shooting in Dnipro, in which five people were killed and another five were injured.

Balan said this at a briefing in Dnipro on Thursday, January 27, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Given that the commander is responsible for any actions, be they good or bad, this morning I wrote a report to the interior minister asking the president of Ukraine to dismiss me as the commander of the National Guard," he said.

Also, according to Balan, the commander of the regiment where the tragedy occurred, his deputy in charge of work with personnel and the chief of staff were suspended from their duties pending the investigation.

Earlier reports said that a National Guard conscript, 20, shot dead four servicemen and a civilian woman and wounded another five at the Pivdenmash aerospace plant in Dnipro at about 03:40 on January 27. The gunman fled the scene. At about 09:30, he was detained in the nearby town of Pidhorodne.

Four of the five wounded service members underwent surgery, and two of them are in critical condition.
