Archaeologists discovered sensational finds in Lviv region

Archaeologists have discovered new finds from the Roman Empire near the village of Kariv, Chervonohrad district.

This was reported in the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Lviv Regional State Administration.

During excavations of monuments of the Germanic tribes discovered two new unique archaeological sites:

burial with ritual objects inside;

an in-depth structure, the purpose of which remains a mystery.

Scientists of the joint archeological expedition of the Museum of Local Lore in Vynnyky and Ivan Franko  Lviv National University under the guidance of Associate Professor of Archeology, Ivan Franko Lviv National University, Yaroslav Onyschuk.

"Apart from human remains, archaeologists found fragments of two glass cups in the burial, which have no analogs in Ukraine. And fragments of a crest, a bronze clasp (brooch), part of a wooden box, and half a token made of white pasty glass. Such tokens were used for Roman board games," says Olena Vasylko, director of the Lviv Regional State Administration's Department of Architecture and Urban Development.

According to researchers, all these valuable items of the Roman Empire indicate that a rich man is buried here.

Archaeologists started to investigate the outskirts of Kariv in 2017. Then local ethnographers accidentally found an ancient sword and other metal products here and brought them to the Historical Museum of Vynnyky.

"Kariv as an archeological find is the discovery of the century. And not only for Ukraine: the bronze cauldron with attaches in the form of male figures, which we found a long time ago, is the third such find in the world," said the head of the excavations, Ph.D. in History Yaroslav Onyschuk.
