A mini school in Bukovyna to revive various types of weaving

A mini-school of weaving was established in the Koniatyn community. Here, traditional and non-traditional types of this craft are being revived and popularized.

This was reported in the press service of the Chernivtsi Regional State Administration.

"The material is natural sheep's wool. Our technique is traditional. The equipment is a loom. This is how products are made in the weaving mini-school, which works at the Samakiv Secondary School," the statement reads.

The regional administration notes that the ancient craft is taught to children in this school by teacher Maria Pauchek. The woman has been weaving since she was young, and has several unique techniques. She used to work at a carpet factory in Putyla. She says that she decided to promote this art form in the Koniatyn community by submitting her project to the Bukovyna Cultural Foundation.

"Our project is called 'Weaving is a brand of the high-altitude village of Samakiv.' Its goal is to revive, actualize traditional and non-traditional types of weaving in the modern interpretation. Thanks to the Bukovyna Cultural Foundation, we are making our dream a reality," Pauchek said.

So far, threads and two machines have been purchased for the mini-school. According to the preserved and own sketches, the mountaineer and her students weave original capes on sofas, armchairs, etc. And also tapestries, i.e. carpets-paintings. All products are made from natural raw materials available in the community, sheep wool.

"We will involve as many community members as possible in weaving. We want this craft not only to develop and glorify our region culturally but also to become one of the business units of the community in the future," said Ms. Maria.

The project "Weaving is a brand of the alpine village of Samakiv" will be implemented until 2023.
