Volodymyr-Volynskyi City lost the second part of its name
The city of Volodymyr-Volynskyi lost the second part of the name.
The Verkhovna Rada renamed the city of Volodymyr-Volynskyi in the Volyn region to Volodymyr. The relevant decision was made at a parliamentary session.
348 people's deputies with 226 necessary votes voted for the renaming of the city to Volodymyr. There were no votes against, five deputies abstained and 20 didn't vote.
The explanatory note to the draft law states that Volodymyr is the historical name of the city, which is one of the oldest in Ukraine and was first mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years.
In 1795, the city was included in the Russian Empire. After that, the prefix Volynskyi was added to the name to distinguish it from Volodymyr-na-Kliazmi.
The note says that the return of the historical name was supported by the united territorial community, the City Council, and the Volyn Regional Council.
