First solution of this kind in Ukraine. A boiler house operating on wood processing waste built in Zhytomyr
A boiler house of tomorrow has been built in Zhytomyr, where residents of 73 apartment buildings will receive heat from a new cogeneration plant operating on wood industry waste. This is the first comprehensive solution of this scale in Ukraine.
This was reported in the press service of the city council.
"We wanted to implement the first project in Zhytomyr because we clearly understand Ukraine can absolutely give up gas, as, for example, residents refused it in the city of Kaunas, where 95% of the heat in the apartments of residents is generated due to such CHPs. Gas has long turned into politics and an instrument of the hybrid war. SECO entrusted us with this project, supported it financially, and consulted us," the mayor said.
The CHP has a capacity of up to 1.2 MW of electricity and 7.1 MW of thermal energy. Its boiler house will run on local alternative fuels, wood chips, and other waste from the woodworking industry. The use of biomass will replace up to 6.4 million m3 of natural gas per year.
The construction of the thermal power plant is part of Switzerland's assistance in improving energy efficiency and energy management. The boiler house is also Switzerland's contribution to Ukraine's green transition and the decarbonization of the district heating system.
The cost of equipment and work performed on the reconstruction of the boiler house is 9 million 92 thousand Swiss francs, including non-refundable technical assistance of the Government of Switzerland: 5 million 208 thousand Swiss francs.
Thanks to the support of SECO, the city council signed a new contract with an Austrian company for the construction of another thermal power plant in Zhytomyr. There are plans for four more such boilers, which will provide 70% of the transition from gas. After that, another project is the construction of a thermal power plant that will operate on RDF. Thus, 90-95% of Zhytomyr will be able to give up gas.
