Electricity production from renewable energy sources in Ukraine increased by 10%

In January-October 2021, compared to the same period in 2020, electricity production from renewable energy sources (RES) increased by more than 10% to 10.023 million MWh.

The State Enterprise "Guaranteed Buyer" reported this.

"For 10 months of 2021, producers of electricity from renewable sources (RES) generated and sold to the Guaranteed Buyer state enterprise 10 023 thousand MWh of carbon-neutral electricity. Production of clean electricity in January-October this year increased by more than 10% compared to the same period in 2020," a statement said.

The share of "green" generation in the energy balance of Ukraine for 10 months of this year reached 9%.

However, despite the growth, the actual production of electricity from RES hasn't reached the values set in the forecast balance of electricity for 2021. According to planned estimates, generation from renewable sources should reach 10.708 million MWh.

It is reported that the largest amount of "green" electricity was generated by solar stations (60.4%), followed by wind (29.8%). The share of energy from biomass/biogas was 7.6%, hydropower is 2.3%.

Since the beginning of the year, the Guaranteed Buyer has paid UAH 48.1 billion for carbon-neutral electricity, of which UAH 36.4 billion for the current year.

More than 40 countries, including Ukraine, reportedly agreed to phase out fossil coal at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow. Major coal-consuming countries, including Canada, Poland, Ukraine, and Vietnam, will gradually phase out the use of this fuel for electricity generation.

Ukraine aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030 and to achieve climate neutrality by 2060. In addition, Ukraine has joined the Net Zero World initiative, which will provide access to the developments of the US Department of Energy for the possible implementation of pilot projects on decarbonization.
