Activists state about the threat of tobacco advertising resuming in Ukraine
Representatives of the Center for Civic Representation "Zhyttia" stated the threat of resumption of tobacco advertising in Ukraine.
They wrote about it on Facebook.
"On behalf of the public, we declare the threat of a resumption of tobacco advertising in Ukraine because of the requirement of the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy to weaken anti-tobacco legislation in accordance with the draft law №4212.
ℹ️ On November 9, Mykyta Poturaiev, on behalf of the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, initiated an appeal to the Committee on Health of the Nation for medical care and health insurance with a request to send the draft law №4358 for a second reading and bring the provisions of the draft №4358 in line with the draft №4212, which provides for the resumption of tobacco advertising in Ukraine.
The members of the committee justified this position by the need to take into account the corporate interests of the media industry, some of whose representatives receive funds from tobacco companies for advertising and sponsorship of tobacco products," the center emphasizes.
The Center for Civic Representation "Zhyttia" emphasizes that "the statements of some people's deputies are nothing more than an attempt to resume advertising of tobacco products in Ukraine, which have been scientifically proven to be drug-addictive and have devastating consequences for human health, due to revision for the second reading of the draft law №4212."
"The fact of interference of persons related to the tobacco industry in the preparation of the draft law on tobacco advertising is a gross violation of Articles 5.3 and 13 of the WHO FCTC and the principle of 'priority of health policy over financial, tax and corporate interests management whose activities are related to the tobacco industry' defined by the Law of Ukraine 2899-IV.
❗️ It is important that in this way the position of the people's deputies contradicts the position of the state of Ukraine, which has ratified and implemented the WHO FCTC, its Guiding Principles, and decisions of the Parties to the Convention," the statement reads.
