The Ukrainian language has become official in one city in Brazil
Ukrainian has become the official language of the municipality of Prudentopolis in Brazil.
The law with this decision was unanimously supported by all deputies present at the October 5 sitting, the World Congress of Ukrainians reported on October 6.
"The municipality of Prudentopolis has already established friendly relations with the Ternopil region, where most Ukrainian immigrants came to Brazil. The new law will open new opportunities for exchanging specialists, educating young people at the university level in Ukraine or electronically, remotely," the statement said.
The Ternopil City Council, a sister city of Prudentopolis, said that the author of the document was Vittorio Sorotiuk, a lawyer, head of the Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation, and vice president of the World Congress of Ukrainians.
"In Prudentopolis, the significance of the Ukrainian language is unique, as there are still publications in Ukrainian, religious celebrations and radio programs are conducted in Ukrainian. The municipality of Prudentopolis is called the capital of "Ukrainian Brazil," since 75% of the population are ethnic Ukrainians, mostly from the Ternopil region," the city council stated.
They also added that in March 2019, Mayor Serhii Nadal together with the mayor of the Brazilian city of Prudentopolis Luis Adelma Klosovsky signed a partnership and cooperation agreement between Ternopil and Prudentopolis.
