A waste recycling plant is planned to open in Zhytomyr in March, thanks to which the city will provide 30% of the heat for the population.

Zhytomyr Mayor Serhii Sukhomlyn spoke about this during a meeting of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities on September 30, the EP reports.

He said that currently, the area of landfills in Ukraine reached 8.5 thousand hectares. Currently, a plant is being built in Zhytomyr that will be able to process 85,000 tons of solid household waste (SHW).

After the processing of solid waste, they receive the fuel (RDF) by the combustion of which gas can be obtained. For example, according to Sukhomlyn, 40 thousand tons of RDF can be obtained from garbage processing at the new plant.

This amount of fuel can provide heat to 30% of the city, the mayor said. As an example, he cited Denmark, where 90% of heat is generated due to RDF.

According to Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi, two plants are also being built in the city. One of them is being built on the plane of the water supply system and will allow sludge to be processed from sewage.

"We will have biogas and our electricity," he explained.
