Zelenskyy: Ukraine has significant potential to increase its role in food supply
One of Ukraine's priorities is efficient agriculture system development and forming global confidence in food safety standards.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this in a video speech at the UN Summit on Food Systems in New York (USA), the Office of the President reports.
"Ukraine is one of the global leaders in the food market. Therefore, the Summit is important for us. We're aware of our responsibility to ensure food security. Ukraine is a reliable partner and didn't create any restrictions on food supply and distribution even in the most panic periods of COVID-19," the head of state noted.
According to him, our country is aware of the contribution it can make to ensuring more sustainable and equitable consumption and is actively working on these tasks.
"Our priority will remain an efficient agricultural system development and the formation of global confidence in applying established food safety standards. Further sustainable development of national food systems is important. We have significant potential to increase our role in the sustainable food supply," he said.
According to him, among the priorities of the draft national roadmap for the transformation of food systems developed in Ukraine is the Healthy Eating for All initiative.
Among other important tasks is the movement towards climate neutrality of production. According to the head of state, this goal will be achieved on the horizon of 2050.
"However, its achievement shouldn't turn into excessive subsidies for wealthy farmers from developed countries. Help should be given to those who need it: farmers from developing countries. Climate policy shouldn't lead to further economic inequality," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In addition, the President is convinced that it's necessary to strengthen the domestic market and stimulate exports.
"Our goal along the way is to ensure food security, transition to sustainable production and marketing models, as well as the development of the necessary financial instruments," the head of state said.
He added that Ukraine was a proactive participant in the process of shaping the agenda in food systems.
"We're ready to continue working with partners and develop our food systems in the context of global challenges facing humanity, both current and future ones," Volodymyr Zelenskyy summed up.
