"Some members don't want problems, others are against enlargement": Latvian Ambassador on Ukraine's accession to the EU

Ukraine's membership in the European Union depends on the consensus of the 27 member states. However, not all EU countries now want to expand the EU's borders.

This is stated in an interview with the Latvian Ambassador to Ukraine Juris Poikans to the Yevropeiska Pravda.

According to the ambassador, until there's a consensus among EU member states, it's difficult to talk about the timing of Ukraine's European integration.

"These 27 countries have very different views on Ukraine, and some of them don't see grounds for EU enlargement yet. But that's not all; those countries that aren't against enlargement want to see new EU members who are ready for the accession. Nobody wants to get additional problems," he explained.

According to Poikans, reforms play an important role. If Ukraine makes some progress in reforms, then the question of EU membership can be raised.

"Then Ukraine will have every reason to say that you want something more than just an Association Agreement with the European Union. What is very important now? It is important that the summits between Ukraine and the European Union are platforms-dialogues," the diplomat added.
