Svitolina reaches Olympics semifinals: before she reached only quarterfinals
Ukraine's number-one tennis player Elina Svitolina reached the semifinals of the Olympic singles tennis tournament in Tokyo. The Ukrainian defeated Italian Camila Giorgi in the quarterfinals of the final in two sets.
According to Hromadske, the match ended with a score of 0:2 (4:6, 4:6).
Earlier, the rivals met twice and won one victory each. The last match in 2017 ended in favor of the Italian player.
To recap, the Ukrainian tennis player played three grueling matches in a single tournament before meeting Giorgi. Svitolina was able to beat all three rivals: Laura Siegemund, Ajla Tomljanović, and Maria Sakkari, in three sets.
Reaching the semifinals means that the Ukrainian tennis player will definitely compete for a medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Previously, Svitolina reached only the quarterfinals of the Olympics in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
Svitolina competes with the winner of the confrontation between Paula Badosa (Spain) and Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic) to reach the final.
The semifinals of the 2020 Olympics in the women's tennis tournament will take place on Thursday, July 29.
