The US Congress has to reject any agreement on Nord Stream-2 – Kaptur

Co-Chair of the Ukrainian Caucus in the US Congress, Democrat Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur condemned the agreement between Washington and Berlin on Nord Stream-2, which became known according to press sources.

She stated this on Tuesday during a speech in Congress, a video of which was posted on her official Twitter page, Ukrinform reports.

"I stand with our allies in Central and Eastern Europe against Nord Stream 2. Congress must reject any agreements that cannot protect Ukraine's transatlantic security and sovereignty," Kaptur said.

A video attached to the text message is a recorded speech to members of Congress on Tuesday.

"As a co-chair of the bipartisan Ukrainian caucus in Congress, I express my deep concern over the issue of transatlantic energy security. The Kremlin, with the participation of European countries, is trying to complete the Nord Stream-2 project," Kaptur said.

She stressed that Nord Stream 2 was a project of Russia's malicious influence, which "will strengthen the levers of Vladimir Putin's influence on Europe and disrupt the NATO alliance."

The congresswoman said that media reports indicated that the Biden administration had reached an agreement with Germany.

"According to these reports, there is little in the deal to deter Russia from forcing our allies. Congress understands the key lessons of history: when Germany and Russia conspire, the peoples of Central and Eastern Europe pay the price," she said.

She recalled that Congress, on a predominantly bipartisan basis, had approved two pieces of legislation providing for sanctions against Nord Stream-2.

"These sanctions are mandatory, not selective," Kaptur said.

Given the administration's violation of these rules, the congresswoman asked the Committee on Appropriations to approve an amendment that abolishes any exemptions from sanctions against Nord Stream-2."
