The Babi Yar. Context by Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa won the Golden Eye award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

"I hope this prize will help the film reach a wider audience around the world. Of course, I hope that this film will be shown in Ukraine and become a subject of meaningful conversation. Such a conversation is especially important for the country where these tragic events took place 80 years ago," said director Sergei Loznitsa at the awards ceremony, the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center posted on Facebook.

The Babi Yar. Context, made with the support of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center, shared the award with A Night of Knowing Nothing, directed by India's Payal Kapadia.

The Babi Yar. Context was created on the basis of the documentary project of the same name, developed by Loznitsa jointly with the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center. The project consists of two dozen episodes edited from archival materials filmed between 1941 and 1966.

The Golden Eye is a documentary film award created in 2015. It is awarded to the best documentary presented in one of the sections of the Cannes Film Festival.
