Ukraine is ready to negotiate compensation due to Nord Stream-2 – Kuleba

Kyiv is ready to negotiate compensation for losing gas transit revenues after the launch of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba stated this in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt, DW reports.

"If we are offered negotiations on compensation, we'll consider it," Kuleba said.

"But we won't necessarily agree to what we'll be offered," the minister added, quoted by dpa.

According to Kuleba, he has the impression that recently, the US determination to seek compensation for Ukraine in the event of the pipeline being completed "has increased significantly."

According to him, the gas pipeline poses a security threat to Ukraine.

"That's why we say that the gas pipeline should be used as a lever to encourage Russia to play a constructive role in the peace process in eastern Ukraine," the minister said.

As reported by Rubryka, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on June 8 that Washington and Berlin were discussing options to mitigate the effects of the pipeline.

According to him, one of the options that Washington is discussing with European partners is to ensure that Ukraine will continue to receive fees for gas transit for "many years to come."

To recap, the administration of US President Joe Biden has decided to abandon sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG and its managing director Matthias Warnig.

One reason for the decision is Washington's unwillingness to worsen relations with Germany.
