Stoltenberg speaks with Zelensky ahead of NATO summit
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has spoken by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of the NATO summit.
According to Ukrinform, Stoltenberg wrote this on his Twitter account.
"Spoke with President Zelensky of our valued partner Ukraine. We discussed the upcoming NATO Summit, the security situation in the region & Russia's unacceptable military build-up. I stressed our continued political & practical support & encouraged their reform process," he wrote.
The decision was made at the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008 that Ukraine and Georgia would become NATO members and a Membership Action Plan should be a step in this direction. There is still no consensus among NATO countries on the provision of MAPs for both countries. Instead, Ukraine and Georgia were advised to continue reforms and wait for the "right" political moment.
NATO granted Ukraine the status of an Enhanced Opportunities Partner on June 12, 2020.
