Ambassador of Ukraine accused Germany's "left" wing of "falsification of history"

Ukraine is outraged by the call of the Left Party faction in the German Bundestag to conclude a new treaty of friendship with Russia on the eve of the 80th anniversary of Hitler's German attack on the USSR.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andrii Melnyk stated this, according to the DW.

The German left didn't mention other Soviet republics in its initiative, including Ukraine and Belarus, which lost millions of citizens in World War II, the ambassador said on Wednesday, May 19.

The diplomat called it a "humiliating transformation of history into an instrument" and a "blow to the faces of millions of Ukrainian war victims." It is unacceptable to tolerate such a "falsification of history," Melnyk stressed.

Ukrainians are urging Germany's ruling coalition and opposition "not to allow the political abuse of the dark sides of the history of National Socialism," the ambassador added. Otherwise, reconciliation between Ukraine and Germany will be in question, the diplomat said.

A few hours earlier, the Bundestag hosted a debate on Russian-German relations.

The representative of the Left Party faction in the Bundestag Sevim Dagdelen called for a new treaty of friendship with Russia. In addition, the Left Party called for the lifting of economic sanctions on Russia.

The resolution of the left didn't find support among deputies.
