In 2020, Ukraine ranked third in the number of new cases in ECtHR

84 out of 983 new cases filed with the European Court of Human Rights in 2020 concerned Ukraine.

It's stated in the annual report of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on implementing the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, European Pravda reports.

A total of 983 new cases were submitted to the ECtHR last year. The countries with the largest number of new cases were Russia (218), Turkey (103), Ukraine (84), Romania (78), and Hungary (61).

At the same time, the number of new cases involving Ukraine decreased compared to the previous year; in 2019, we filed 111 such cases.

Ukraine was also the third country with the highest number of cases pending before the ECtHR in 2020, 567 cases. The largest number of cases pending before the court last year concerned the Russian Federation, 1,789 cases.

"In 2020, many previous projects were continued, including on Ukraine and the main issues raised in the context of implementing ECtHR decisions. Also, the Secretariat of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe worked to strengthen parliamentary oversight of the Court's decisions in Ukraine," the report says.

Overall, the report shows that states across Europe continue to make progress in enforcing the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

"However, further work is needed to address the systemic problems identified by the ECtHR. Such problems include ill-treatment or deaths caused by security forces, hard conditions of detention. These include interstate cases and cases of abuse of rights and freedoms," the Council of Europe stated.

"This year's report demonstrates that our member states take the obligation to comply with the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights seriously, even in difficult circumstances," Council of Europe Secretary-General Marija Pejčinović Burić said.
