In Ukraine, one can learn about crimes in occupied territories on Internet portal

A cooperation memorandum was signed at the Office of the President to consolidate efforts to preserve documented facts about crimes in the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donetsk and Luhansk regions. It involves creating a relevant Internet portal.

The press service of the President's Office reports.

The Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the Prosecutor's General Office, the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, the International Renaissance Foundation, and the Security Environment Research Center  "Prometheus" signed the memorandum.

"At the instruction of the President of Ukraine and to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine, de-occupation, and reintegration of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, the Representative's team works systematically to implement policies and principles of transitional justice. The right to know the truth is, of course, one of the obligatory elements of our work in this direction," the Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in ARC Anton Korynevych emphasized.

They expect that the online resource will contain a variety of data, including eyewitness testimony, archival sources, media information, decisions and resolutions of international organizations, photos, and videos.

"Initially, these will be the first 30 stories about crimes committed in the temporarily occupied territory: human rights, war crimes, environment, economy, etc. The system will work with a convenient search: by persons, by places, by time," the head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, Anton Drobovych, said.

The key requirement for the entire project is reliability, objectivity, and reliance on official data. In particular, the portal will be based on the work results of the Criminal Proceedings Supervision Department for crimes committed during the armed conflict of the Prosecutor General's Office, facts and evidence documented by non-governmental organizations.

Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Gunduz Mammadov reminded that since 2014, law enforcement agencies of Ukraine and prosecutors had been recording and investigating crimes committed in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. These are over 20,000 criminal offenses, including war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Oleksandr Sushko, executive director of the International Renaissance Foundation, believes that the creation of such a portal will help Ukraine provide more systematic information to the international community about crimes and events in the temporarily occupied territories.
