Poll: who did Ukrainians call a politician and loser of the year?

"Ukrainians with a relative majority (14.5%) named the incumbent President the politician of the year which is expected. Incumbent Presidents always become the politicians of the year. They are the most heard, their actions are the most discussed, both positive and negative," Shapovalov, a foundation's analyst, said.

According to him, the leader of the European Solidarity party, ex-president Petro Poroshenko, took second place in this ranking. He's considered the politician of the year by 9%. Both politicians lead the popular rating "Loser of the Year."

According to respondents, the event that affected the lives of the vast majority of people in 2020 was the coronavirus epidemic.

Thus, 43% of Ukrainians called the epidemic the "event of the year," and as expected, absolutely everyone assessed it as a negative event. Undoubtedly, Ukrainians called the war in Donbas a negative event of the year. In addition, 12% named spring quarantine the event of the year, and this event was also unanimously assessed as negative.

Very nearly the only positive event was the construction of highways under the "Big Construction" project. Only 5% consider the construction of roads a negative thing.

2020 will be remembered as a year of terrible events. In general, only 16% of respondents called the events they consider the major events of the year positive. For comparison, in 2019 the key event of the year (mostly parliamentary and presidential elections) was considered positive by 58%.

According to the analyst, most Ukrainians (38%) also call the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic the key event of the year in the world and unanimously evaluate this event negatively. 16% of Ukrainians called the civil protests in Belarus the event of the year, of which 19% considered the event positive and 71% negative. Ukrainians also mostly assess the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan as a negative event.

The only positive world event for most was a coronavirus vaccine invention.

The world events of 2020 also remained mostly negative in the perception of Ukrainians. Only 17% of citizens called those events they consider the events of the year positive.

A nationwide survey was conducted from 5 to 13 December 2020 in all regions of Ukraine, except for the Crimea and the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

2004 face-to-face interviews were conducted with respondents living in 131 settlements of Ukraine. The selection is representative of the adult population (18 years and older). The statistical error of the selection (with a probability of 0.95 and a design effect of 1.5) does not exceed 3.3%.
