Ukraine was re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council: Russia also joined
Since the founding of the UN Human Rights Council in 2006, Ukraine has been re-elected as a part of the council for 2021-2023.
First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Japarova announced it on her Facebook page.
"As in the earlier three years, we will work with our partners to make sure that human rights take their rightful place. To remind them of the highest value of human life. To show that there are no "politicized" and so-called "real" topics. To reaffirm that New York with the Security Council cannot be self-sufficient without Geneva and the Human Rights Council. So, the security agenda is inseparable from the human rights agenda, because without proper steps to strengthen human rights and the rule of law, there can be no lasting peace, peaceful coexistence, and common prosperity. Especially against the backdrop of fundamental freedoms being affected in different parts of the world," she wrote.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba tweeted that Russia, a "known human rights violator," had also joined the Council. According to him, they chose it because of a lack of competition in the Eastern European group.
The Minister added that Ukraine will not allow Russia to abuse the place in the council to cover human rights violations.

"We will work to ensure that the Council genuinely protects those in need, rather than be a shelter for impunity allowing individual members, such as the Russian Federation, to misuse their election to the HRC to cover up their crimes against humanity, peace, and international security," Japarova summed up.
Note: The UN Human Rights Council is an international human rights body in the UN system that conducts general research, prepares recommendations and drafts of international legal acts in human rights protection, and hears reports of specially established subsidiary bodies.
